Why We Need to Prioritize BIPOC Mental Health Month

May is officially recognized as Mental Health Month in the United States. However, it should also be noted that May is also known as BIPOC Mental Health Month. This month provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of mental health within the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. The mental health concerns faced by this community, coupled with the pandemic-induced stressors, require a focused effort to prioritize their mental well-being.

The Importance of BIPOC Mental Health Month

Historically, BIPOC communities have experienced significant disparities in accessing quality care for mental health services. Some of these disparities may include the lack of culturally-relevant therapy, high costs, and stigma surrounding mental health issues. These factors can make it difficult for these communities to seek out mental health care when needed. Therefore, BIPOC Mental Health Month serves as a reminder of the importance of giving attention to these communities’ mental health needs.

The prevalence of mental health issues in BIPOC communities is significant. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2019, 18.9% of adults belonging to a minority racial or ethnic group had any mental illness. At the same time, only 10.5% of non-Hispanic whites had the same diagnosis. This disparity highlights why BIPOC people should be given attention and support to deal with their mental well-being.

The Intersection of BIPOC and Current Events

The events of the past year, such as the pandemic, police brutality, and social unrest, have undoubtedly impacted the mental health of the BIPOC community. For instance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted a surge in anxiety and depression in adults amid the pandemic. In contrast, the American Psychological Association (APA) reported the pandemic’s psychological toll on Black Americans, highlighted by the rise in violence and systemic racism.

The aforementioned events’ impact compounds BIPOC communities’ pre-existing mental health disparities, making the BIPOC Mental Health Month a necessity. It encourages us to acknowledge and talk about the effects events like these have on BIPOC communities’ collective mental health and well-being.

Fighting Stigma and Finding Solutions

One of the main obstacles to BIPOC populations accessing mental health care is the overwhelming mental health stigma in these communities. As a result, many individuals choose to stay quiet and suffer in silence. It is essential to find ways to eliminate this stigma and encourage individuals to speak freely about their mental health struggles. Cultural beliefs and approaches help reduce the stigma and increase access to mental health care. These communities’ effective solutions include giving access to professional support, providing interventions for specific groups in the community, and addressing systemic issues.

Conclusion

BIPOC Mental Health Month is an essential opportunity to celebrate, support and prioritize the mental health needs of BIPOC communities. Racism, cultural mistrust, lack of representation, and access to care can cause significant disparities in mental health and well-being, and addressing these concerns requires multifaceted solutions. We can all play our part in alleviating the mental health issues that the BIPOC community experiences. From educating family members, investing in community-based solutions, advocating for policy change and supporting one another, we can help create a supportive and equitable mental health system. Let us all take the ultimate responsibility to address these mental health disparities during the BIPOC Mental Health Month and beyond.
