Understanding Cultural Values is Critical for 2 Bac Writing

The world we live in today is more connected than ever before. With advancements in technology and communication, people from different corners of the planet can interact and work together more easily. However, with this increased intercultural exchange also comes the need for greater cultural sensitivity, especially in the field of writing.

Whether you’re writing a business report, an academic research paper or a creative piece, being aware of cultural nuances and values is crucial to ensure that your writing is effective, respectful, and impactful. This is particularly important for students of the 2 Bac curriculum who often have to navigate multiple cultures and languages.

To start with, it’s worth noting that cultures have different communication styles. In some cultures, for example, direct communication is valued, while in others, indirect communication is preferred. Understanding these contrasting styles is significant, as failure to adapt can lead to undesirable outcomes. For instance, being too direct in certain cultures can come across as rude, while being too indirect in other cultures may lead to misunderstandings.

Moreover, knowing the cultural values that underpin communication is vital. For example, in many Asian cultures, the value of saving face (that is, avoiding shame and embarrassment) is essential. So, when providing feedback on a piece of writing or reporting on a problem, it’s recommended to consider how the delivery of the message might impact your reader’s sense of saving face.

Another fundamental cultural value is the concept of ‘face-saving’, which is particularly prevalent in the Middle Eastern cultures. Achievement and reputation play a massive role in not only society but also individuals’ lives. Therefore, writing that might humiliate, insult or put someone in a vulnerable position should be avoided.

Body language is another critical aspect of communication that is infused in cultural values. For instance, while direct eye contact may be seen as being respectful in Western cultures, it can be considered impolite or invasive in other cultures such as Japan. Likewise, a handshake that is too firm might be perceived as aggressive or rude in some cultures, while a too limp handshake can come across as weak.

Consequently, to be effective in writing 2 Bac projects that require intercultural communication, it’s necessary to take a cultural sensitivity approach. Ensuring that you have enough knowledge about the cultures that you’re dealing with and that you keep that knowledge in mind when crafting your writing is crucial.

To illustrate, suppose a student from Saudi Arabia writes a business proposal for a company in Canada. In that case, it’s recommended that they research the Canadian corporate culture and communication style to understand the Canadian perspective better. They might find several cultural differences between Canada and Saudi Arabia, such as the balance between directness vs. indirectness; formal vs. informal language; and the language of appreciation varies across the two cultures. Taking such differences into account can make the proposal more effective and lead to successful collaboration.

In conclusion, cultural values are highly influential in communication styles, attitudes and behaviours, and, therefore, have a massive impact on writing. Whether you’re writing a creative piece, an academic paper, or a business proposal, understanding the cultural values of your readers will help you communicate effectively and build strong relationships across cultures. By targeting the needs of your audience, you can ensure that your message is received accurately, respectfully and positively.
