Europe, a continent of great diversity, is rich in its historical, cultural and natural heritage. It is a treasure trove, a potpourri of great values and traditions that are passed down from one generation to another. Europeans are rightly proud of their heritage, and for good reason.

Heritage connects people with their past, inspires their present, and shapes their future. It shapes individual and collective identities, reflects the values of society, and affects emotional attachment and well-being. Recognizing this, the European Union (EU) is taking a proactive approach towards preserving and promoting cultural heritage as an essential component of its future.

One of the ways in which the EU is gauging the pulse of its citizens on this subject is through the ‘Special Eurobarometer 466 on Cultural Heritage’ which was carried out in 2017. This survey sought to explore Europeans’ attitudes towards cultural heritage and its importance for future generations.

The results of the survey showed that 83% of Europeans believe that cultural heritage is an important factor in promoting a sense of belonging and unity. Furthermore, 72% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed that cultural heritage was an important factor in promoting cultural diversity.

The survey also indicated the significance of cultural heritage in promoting local and regional development and in determining a region’s uniqueness. Indeed, 72% of respondents agreed that cultural heritage is instrumental in creating jobs and supporting local economic development.

From a personal development perspective, cultural heritage plays a major role in shaping our identity and fostering our well-being. Heritage gives us a sense of continuity with our past and reinforces our shared cultural values.

The EU recognizes the importance of cultural heritage and has implemented several initiatives through its Creative Europe Programme, Horizon 2020, and European Structural Funds to foster and promote cultural heritage. The EU also supports heritage innovation, regenerating cultural heritage sites, and improving the quality and skills of cultural and creative sectors.

In conclusion, the Special Eurobarometer 466 on cultural heritage matters for Europe’s future, as it underscores the vital role cultural heritage plays in promoting a sense of collective identity, cultural diversity, economic development, and personal development. The EU’s commitment towards promoting, preserving and innovating cultural heritage serves as a reminder that cultural heritage is an essential component of our human experience. Thus, preserving and celebrating our heritage is a responsibility we owe to ourselves and future generations.
