In recent years, awareness around mental health has grown significantly, particularly in children. It’s no longer a taboo subject and there is now more emphasis on providing appropriate resources to support children’s mental well-being. The need for children’s mental health services has never been more crucial than now, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Children are more susceptible to mental health problems due to their developing brains and emotions. Over the years, statistics have shown that there has been a steady increase in the number of children experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders. In fact, 1 in 5 children and adolescents have a mental illness, and 75% of mental health issues start before the age of 24.

Mental health services for children are important for several reasons. Firstly, early intervention is key in preventing or reducing the severity of mental health disorders. If left untreated, mental health problems can have a lasting impact on a child’s life, including their academic achievements, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Secondly, children who receive appropriate mental health services are more likely to experience positive outcomes. These services can include therapy, counseling, medication, and support groups. They help children develop coping skills and enhance their resilience levels.

Thirdly, mental health services for children help to break down the stigma surrounding mental health. When children receive support for their mental health, it sends a message that it’s okay to talk about mental health and seek help when needed. This can have a positive impact on the child’s well-being and can also help to create a more accepting and empathetic society.

Finally, providing mental health services for children also benefits the wider community. Children who receive appropriate mental health support are more likely to become healthy, productive adults who contribute positively to society.

One example of successful mental health service provision is the ‘Friends for Life’ program- a cognitive-behavioural therapy program aimed at children aged 8-11 years old who experience anxiety. The program has been found to reduce anxiety symptoms in many children in a relatively short time frame.

In conclusion, children’s mental health services are more important than ever before. Early intervention, positive outcomes, breaking down stigma and wider community benefits are all reasons why we need to provide high-quality mental health services to children. If we invest in the mental health of our children now, we’re investing in a healthier future for everyone.
