There are currently 1121 World Heritage Sites in the world, covering natural and cultural heritage.

This convention recognizes that cultural heritage is not limited to tangible cultural properties but also includes intangible cultural heritage such as traditional knowledge, songs, dance, and rituals. UNESCO’s efforts in safeguarding cultural heritage also include capacity building and education. Moreover, in 2015, UNESCO launched the Emergency Safeguarding of the Syrian Cultural Heritage program, aiming to protect Syrian cultural heritage amid the ongoing conflict. The program includes inventorying Syrian cultural heritage sites, training local professionals, and implementing emergency measures to protect the cultural heritage sites that are most at risk in Syria.
