Social determinants of health refer to the various non-medical factors that affect our overall health and wellbeing. These factors include economic stability, education, social and community context, access to healthcare, and physical environment. It’s essential to understand how these determinants affect our lives and the communities we live in.

Economic stability is a critical social determinant of health. People who struggle with financial instability may find it challenging to access adequate healthcare, afford healthy food options, and live in safe housing environments. Low-income individuals also experience higher levels of stress, which can lead to physical and mental health problems.

Education is another essential social determinant of health. A lack of access to quality education can impact a person’s ability to earn a suitable income, manage their health, and make informed health decisions. Education also influences our ability to comprehend and navigate the healthcare system.

Social and community context also plays a vital role in determining our overall health. Strong social support from friends, family, and community members can improve our resilience to stress and promote better mental health. The quality of our physical environment, including access to clean air and water, can also impact our wellbeing.

Access to healthcare is often viewed as a critical social determinant of health. It refers to the availability and accessibility of health services, including preventive care, chronic care management, and emergency medical services. For those living in underserved communities or without health insurance, access to quality healthcare can be a significant challenge.

At the individual level, there are some things we can do to address social determinants of health. These include improving our financial stability by developing a savings plan, accessing education and job training programs, and seeking out social support from friends and family.

At the community level, there are also several interventions that can improve social determinants of health. These may include improving access to healthy food options, increasing access to affordable housing, and investing in public transportation to improve access to healthcare services.

Recognizing the impact of social determinants of health is vital to promoting health equity and reducing health disparities. By understanding these factors, we can begin to develop interventions that target the root causes of poor health outcomes and work towards creating more equitable and healthier communities.
