Understanding the Differences Between Informational Influence and Normative Influence

As social beings, we are constantly influenced by the people around us, consciously or unconsciously. In psychology, informational influence and normative influence are two types of social influence that play significant roles in shaping an individual’s behavior and belief system.

Informational Influence

Informational influence occurs when a person conforms to the beliefs or actions of others because they believe they possess more accurate knowledge or information. It is based on the assumption that people want to make the right decision and will look to others for guidance in the absence of relevant information. As a result, it is often internalized and rationalized by the individual as a personal belief.

For instance, imagine a group of researchers discussing a complex scientific concept. In such a scenario, a person who is unsure about their understanding of the concept may conform to the beliefs expressed by the experts in the group, believing them to be more informed and reliable.

Normative Influence

On the other hand, normative influence occurs when individuals conform to the expectations or rules of their society or group to fit in, be accepted, or avoid disapproval and rejection. It is based on the desire for social approval and can be seen as an external force exerted by others on an individual.

For example, consider a scenario where a group of friends decides to go to a fancy restaurant for dinner. Even if one of the friends has no interest in going to such a place, they may still conform to the group’s decision to avoid being excluded or criticized by the group.

Key Differences Between Informational and Normative Influence

While both informational and normative influence contribute to social conformity, they have fundamental differences that set them apart. Informational influence is based on the belief that others have more accurate information, while normative influence is based on the desire for social acceptance. Informational influence is usually more permanent and internalized by the individual, while normative influence may only produce temporary or superficial changes in behavior.

Conclusion

In conclusion, understanding the differences between informational influence and normative influence is crucial in comprehending social conformity. While informational influence can lead to accurate decision making, normative influence can be detrimental to individual freedom and autonomy. We should be mindful of the type of influence we are under and evaluate the impact it has on our actions and beliefs. By doing so, we can make conscious and informed choices that align with our values and goals.
