If the value of CPK exceeds one, the manufacturing process is deemed capable of producing products that meet customer requirements consistently. The higher the CPK value, the better the process performance, and the closer the process lies within the acceptable limits of customer specifications.

Examples of CPK in Manufacturing

Suppose a manufacturing company produces bolts with a specification that they must have a diameter of 6 millimeters with a tolerance of ± 0.1 millimeters. The USL in this case would be 6.1 millimeters, and the LSL would be 5.9 millimeters. If the mean diameter of the bolts produced is equal to 6 millimeters, and the process standard deviation is 0.02 millimeters, the CPK value would be calculated as follows:

CPK = min (6.1 – 6, 6 – 5.9) / (3 * 0.02) = 1.66

If the CPK value in this case is over one, it indicates that the manufacturing process is capable of producing bolts that meet customer specifications consistently.

Another example is a manufacturing company that produces a particular part with a tolerance of ± 0.1 inches. The specification limits are at 3.0 inches (lower limit) and 3.4 inches (upper limit). If the mean of the process is 3.2 inches and the process standard deviation is 0.04 inches, the CPK value would be calculated as follows:

CPK = min (3.4 – 3.2, 3.2 – 3.0) / (3 * 0.04) = 1.66

Again, a CPK value of more than one indicates that the process is capable of meeting customer specifications consistently.
