The Ultimate Road Trip Through California: From the Coast to the Desert
California is a state of contrasts. It has some of the most beautiful beaches, mountains, forests, and deserts in the world, as well as some of the most vibrant cities, towns, and cultures. One way to experience these diverse landscapes and communities is to take a road trip, ideally along the iconic California State Route 1 and California State Route 395, which run parallel to the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Nevada mountain range, respectively. Here is a suggested itinerary for a 10-day road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles, via Monterey, Big Sur, San Simeon, Paso Robles, Morro Bay, Santa Barbara, Ojai, and Joshua Tree National Park.
Day 1: San Francisco to Monterey (120 miles)

Drive further south on State Route 1 and pass through the small towns of Lucia, Gorda, and Ragged Point, where you can see sea lions, whales, and otters. Visit Hearst Castle, a historic mansion built by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, and learn about its eclectic architecture, art, and antiques. Spend the night in San Simeon or nearby Cambria, where you can stroll along the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk.
Day 4: San Simeon to Paso Robles (38 miles)
Drive east on State Route 46, also known as Wine Country Highway, and visit some of the best wineries and vineyards in Paso Robles, known for its rich and varied wine varietals, such as Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. Take a tour, taste some wines, and enjoy the scenic views of the valleys and hills. Spend the night in Paso Robles or nearby Templeton, where you can also dine at some of the acclaimed restaurants.
Day 5: Paso Robles to Morro Bay (30 miles)
Drive west on State Route 41 and reach Morro Bay, a charming and picturesque seaside town known for its eponymous volcanic rock and marine wildlife. Visit the Morro Bay Estuary Nature Center, rent a kayak or a paddleboard, and watch some sea otters, harbor seals, pelicans, and eagles. Spend the night in Morro Bay or nearby Los Osos, where you can also sample some fresh seafood.
Day 6: Morro Bay to Santa Barbara (100 miles)
Drive south on U.S. Route 101 and reach Santa Barbara, a popular resort town with a Mediterranean vibe, palm-lined boulevards, and Spanish colonial architecture. Visit the Santa Barbara Mission, the County Courthouse, and the Funk Zone, a hipster district known for its breweries, galleries, and boutiques. Spend the night in Santa Barbara or nearby Carpinteria, where you can also surf or sunbathe on the beaches.
Day 7: Santa Barbara to Ojai (35 miles)
Drive east on State Route 150 and enter Ojai, a small and artistic town nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains and orchards. Enjoy the quaint downtown area, the Ojai Valley Trail, and the Libbey Bowl, a historic outdoor venue for concerts and events. Spend the night in Ojai or nearby Ventura, where you can also explore the harbor and the pier.
Day 8: Ojai to Joshua Tree National Park (190 miles)
Drive east on U.S. Route 101 and reach Riverside, where you can switch to State Route 60, then to Interstate 10, and finally to State Route 62, which leads to Joshua Tree National Park. This unique park is known for its otherworldly rock formations, eerie landscapes, and diverse flora and fauna. Hike, camp, or stargaze in this mystical and awe-inspiring place. Spend the night in or near the park, where you can also learn about the local tribes and cultures.
Day 9: Joshua Tree National Park to Palm Springs (50 miles)
Drive west on State Route 62 and reach Palm Springs, a legendary oasis for celebrities, retirees, and sun-seekers. Visit the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which takes you to the top of the San Jacinto Mountains, the Indian Canyons, which offer scenic hiking trails and waterfalls, and the Palm Springs Art Museum, which showcases contemporary and modern art and architecture. Spend the night in Palm Springs or nearby Rancho Mirage, where you can also relax in some of the luxurious spas and golf courses.
Day 10: Palm Springs to Los Angeles (110 miles)
Drive west on Interstate 10 and enter Los Angeles, the largest and most diverse city in California, and possibly in the world. Visit some of the iconic landmarks, neighborhoods, and attractions, such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Beverly Hills mansions, the Santa Monica Pier, the Getty Center, and the Griffith Observatory. Spend the night in Los Angeles or nearby Santa Monica, where you can also enjoy the beach and the nightlife.
This road trip is just a sample of what California has to offer. You can customize it to your own interests, budget, and time.
