The Ultimate Florida Road Trip Itinerary: From Miami to Key West

Are you a traveler seeking adventure, stunning views, and a dose of history? Look no further than a road trip through the Sunshine State, specifically from Miami to Key West. This 113-mile journey on the iconic Overseas Highway is a true bucket list experience.

Starting in Miami, famous for its vibrant nightlife, Art Deco architecture, and world-famous beaches, you’ll head south towards the Florida Keys. You’ll follow coastal Highway 1, one of the most scenic drives in the world. It passes through the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean, and over 42 bridges connecting 34 islands all the way to Key West.

As you start your trip on the outskirts of Miami, set your GPS to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne, your first stop. After trekking up to the top of the park’s stunning lighthouse, you’ll want to relax on the beach. The water is crystal clear green with no waves, making it a wonderful spot for a swim, or just soaking in the sun. Grab lunch at Lighthouse Café, known for their smoked fish dip.

Next up is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, in Key Largo. It is home to the third largest reef in the world and offers snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottom boat trips. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to swim alongside a variety of sea creatures, including colorful tropical fish, turtles, and maybe even a friendly manatee.

The Keys are full of quirky and unique landmarks- don’t miss a visit to Robbie’s of Islamorada. Feed the tarpons here- massive fish that will jump out of the water for bait fish at your fingertips. Next, drive through the small towns of Marathon, Big Pine Key, and Sugarloaf Key. You can’t miss the giant Blue Heron Bridge, or the “Welcome to the Keys” sign on Summerland Key.

Stop at Bahia Honda State Park, one of the best beaches in the country, with soft white sand and turquoise water. This is the midpoint between Miami and Key West, a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset and take a dip in the water.

As you approach Key West, don’t miss a visit to the southernmost point of the Continental United States. The colorful buoy is a must-see and great for a photo-op! Wander through the island’s charming streets, lined with historic pastel-colored homes, galleries, and boutiques.

Finally, enjoy Key West’s beautiful sunset from Mallory Square, with music, street performers, and a festive atmosphere. Don’t forget to try the world-famous Key Lime Pie before your trip is over.

As you can see, a Miami to Key West road trip is certainly one-of-a-kind, filled with beaches, coral reefs, and fun landmarks. With so many stops available, this trip can be customized depending on your interests. It is worth the drive just for the scenery and experience alone. Don’t hesitate to plan your trip soon, and enjoy the adventure!
