Computerization in modern society has become a ubiquitous fact, and there’s no denying that it has brought about a host of benefits. However, it’s time to confront the reality that there are also substantial disadvantages that come with relying so heavily on technology.

One major drawback of computerization is an increased vulnerability to cyber attacks. As more and more crucial information is stored digitally, hackers have become increasingly sophisticated in their efforts to breach security systems and steal sensitive data. In the worst-case scenario, cyber attacks can even cause physical damage and loss of life, as was the case in the 2015 Ukraine power grid attack.

Another downside of computerization is the potential loss of jobs. Automation has already had a significant impact on the labor market, and there’s no reason to believe that trend will slow down anytime soon. While new jobs are emerging in fields such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, the fact remains that many people who were previously able to make a living with manual labor are now being left behind.

In addition to these issues, computerization can also exacerbate existing social problems. For example, some studies have suggested that excessive screen time can lead to reduced social skills, depression, and anxiety in young people. Similarly, the rise of social media has been linked to erosion of privacy, the spreading of misinformation, and the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes and biases.

The fact is, we can’t turn back the clock on computerization. However, we can take steps to mitigate the negative effects. This could include investing in better cybersecurity measures, providing education and training programs to help people transition to new careers, and encouraging responsible digital citizenship. By acknowledging the risks of computerization and working to address them, we can ensure that its benefits truly outweigh its drawbacks.
