Thailand is known for many things, but few are more splendid than its water festivals. Every year, visitors flock to the country from all over the world to participate in these spectacular celebrations.
Songkran, also known as the Thai New Year, is the most famous water festival in Thailand. It takes place in April and lasts for three days. During this time, locals and tourists alike take to the streets armed with water guns, buckets and hoses, soaking anything and everything that crosses their path. Songkran is a time of renewal and purification, a time to wash away the old and bring in the new.
Another popular water festival is the Loi Krathong. This celebration takes place in November, during the full moon of the twelfth lunar month. The star attraction of the festival is the release of Krathongs – small boats made out of banana leaves, decorated with flowers and candles. Thais believe that, by releasing the boats into the water, they are symbolically releasing their troubles and misfortunes. The visuals of thousands of Krathongs floating down the river are breathtaking.
Last but not least is the Boon Bang Fai rocket festival, which occurs in May every year. This festival is unique because it is mostly celebrated in the northern region of Thailand. It involves the launching of homemade rockets, some of which can reach heights of over a kilometer. The rocket festival features a competition where the team that launches the highest rocket wins the contest.
In conclusion, Thailand is a land of magic and wonder, and its water festivals are just another facet that sets it apart from the rest. The combination of the colorful celebrations, the joyous mood of the people, and the breathtaking visual displays make these festivals a must-visit for anyone who finds themselves in the country.
