Over-the-counter (OTC) medication is a quick remedy for minor illnesses and health discomforts. You don’t need a prescription to buy them – a fact that makes them a popular choice for many. They are convenient, affordable, and readily available. However, like any other medication, OTC drugs have their side effects. Here are some of them:

1. Liver damage: The liver filters toxic substances from blood, including medication. Some OTC drugs, when taken in large quantities or combined with other drugs, can damage the liver. Common culprits are acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin and ibuprofen.

2. Kidney damage: NSAIDs are also associated with kidney damage if taken for prolonged periods. They can cause kidney injury and worsen pre-existing kidney problems.

3. Stomach bleeding: NSAIDs can irritate the stomach lining, leading to inflammation, ulcers, and bleeding. This side effect is more common in elderly people, those with a history of stomach problems, or those taking NSAIDs in high doses.

4. Allergic reactions: Some people are allergic to certain OTC medication. The allergic reactions can range from mild (rash, itchiness) to severe (anaphylaxis, difficulty breathing). Always read the label and ask a doctor if you have a medical condition or are taking other medication.

5. Drowsiness: Some OTC medication, such as antihistamines, may cause drowsiness. This side effect can impair judgment, concentration, and reaction time, making it unsafe to drive or operate machinery.

6. Addiction: Some OTC medication, such as cough syrups and painkillers, contain addictive substances. Taking them for a prolonged period, or in higher doses than recommended, can lead to addiction or dependence.

7. Interaction with other medication: OTC medication can interact with prescription drugs, herbal supplements, or other OTC medication. This interaction can lead to unexpected side effects or reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

The above are some of the side effects of OTC medication. Always read the label, follow the recommended dosage, and consult a doctor if you have any doubts or medical conditions. Don’t hesitate to call emergency services if you experience severe side effects like breathing difficulties, chest pain, or allergic reaction symptoms.
