Failure is a necessary component of the innovation process. Although failure is never something most of us seek out, it is sometimes an inevitable result of daring to try something new. Although it can feel devastating, failure provides valuable lessons that can be applied to future attempts at innovation. Here are four ways failure can be viewed as indispensable:

1. Innovation is risky but failure can be instructive: Innovation often relies on thinking outside the box and taking calculated risks. Failure can show what didn’t work and what could be modified to make future innovations more likely to succeed.

2. Failure is a sign that progress is being made: Innovation often involves experiments that might not work out, but these failures provide the information needed to make progress. The fact that innovation is tried at all is a sign that progress is being made by definition; as people try to find new solutions and approaches, failure is an indication of learning rather than stagnation.

3. Failed experiments are important for research and development: Failed experiments will provide valuable information for future product development by letting researchers understand what holds water, what doesn’t, and what might be left unexplored. This information can then be used to refine and improve future experiments, increasing their chances of success.

4. A culture that embraces failure is a culture that fosters innovation: A culture that punishes failure and setbacks is not a culture that will encourage experimentation and creative approaches. Embracing failure, on the other hand, can lead to a more open and innovative culture that encourages problem-solving.

If we can learn to view failure as a crucial part of the innovation process, rather than something to be avoided at all costs, we might be more likely to reach unprecedented heights of innovation in the future. It is only by taking the risks that invariably lead to setbacks that we can find our path forward towards true innovation and change.
