In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, fame and glory are highly regarded by many of the characters. Odysseus himself is obsessed with obtaining fame and returning home with great riches and treasures. However, this obsession with fame is not limited to just Odysseus.

Throughout the epic, we see characters such as Telemachus, Menelaus, and even the suitors vying for status and recognition. Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, is often praised for his potential to become a great leader and hero. Menelaus, the king of Sparta, is known for his wealth and power, which also translates to his reputation. And the suitors, though detested by the reader, are seeking to marry Penelope solely for the power and recognition that comes with being her husband.

This obsession with fame is not exclusive to the mortal characters either. The gods themselves are often preoccupied with their own status and recognition, particularly the goddess Athena. Athena seeks to keep her favored mortals in high regard and is willing to go to great lengths to ensure they receive the recognition they deserve.

The consequences of this obsession with fame are apparent throughout the epic. The suitors’ selfish actions lead to their eventual downfall and death, while Odysseus’ obsession with fame causes him to take unnecessary risks and prolong his journey home. It is the characters who prioritize loyalty, courage, and humility over fame who ultimately come out on top, such as Odysseus’ faithful wife Penelope, who stays true to her husband and ultimately brings peace to their home.

In conclusion, The Odyssey portrays the damaging effects of the obsession with fame and the importance of humility and loyalty in one’s character. While fame and recognition may be desirable, they should not be the sole focus, as the pursuit of these things often leads to destructive behavior and consequences.
