Italy is celebrated across the globe for its rich culture, stunning architectural heritage, and of course, its food. From pizza and pasta to risotto and gelato, Italian cuisine has something for every palate. While the cuisine is popular all over the world, it is important to note that it isn’t a homogenous food culture, but rather a diverse cuisine region by region. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the differences in Italian cuisine as per their regions.
Starting with the north-eastern part of Italy, Veneto is known for its famous risotto dish, the risi e bisi, which is a creamy risotto with peas and pancetta. The region is also home to Tiramisu which is a popular dessert made of ladyfingers soaked in coffee and layered with mascarpone cheese. Moving over to the neighboring region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the dish Jota is a must-try. It’s a hearty stew made of beans, sauerkraut, potatoes and pork ribs.
The Emilia-Romagna region is known for its handcrafted tortellini and rich pasta dishes like lasagna and tagliatelle al ragù. Bologna, the capital of this region, is the birthplace of the famous meaty sauce – Bolognese. The region of Tuscany is home to the iconic thick soup known as Ribollita, which is made from vegetables, beans and stale bread. The Tuscan region is also famous for its charcuterie, and the Cinta Senese Salumi and the Tuscan ham are must-try dishes.
The Lazio region, where the capital Rome is located, is known for its classic dish Cacio e Pepe which is spaghetti tossed with pecorino cheese and black pepper. Moving over to the coastal region of Campania, pizza is the specialty, which makes sense given that the famed city of Naples is located here. The pizza Margherita, made with tomatoes, Mozarella and basil, is a famous dish of this region.
Sicily, the island located at the toe of the boot-shaped peninsula, is famous for its couscous dishes. Its most popular dish, however, is the sweet cannoli dessert, a pastry filled with sweetened ricotta cheese and honey or chocolate chips.
This little journey across the regions of Italy highlights the diversity and depth of Italian cuisine that is celebrated and loved by so many of us. Whether you try the creamy risotto of Veneto, the fresh pasta of Emilia-Romagna, or the pizza of Naples, Italy will always have something to offer to your taste buds.
