NASA Career and Space Missions

In 1994, Kalpana joined NASA and became a naturalized US citizen. Her first space mission was as a mission specialist on the shuttle Columbia in 1997. She flew into space again in 2003 on the same shuttle but this time as a crew commander. Unfortunately, the mission ended in tragedy as the shuttle disintegrated during re-entry, killing all seven crew members, including Kalpana.

Kalpana’s accomplishments in her short career were great. She logged over 30 days, 14 hours, and 54 minutes in space.
