The Importance of Representation: Growing Up as an Arabian Person in America

As an Arabian person growing up in America, the need for representation was always evident. It was challenging to see individuals like me in media, advertisements, and even my own community. However, it wasn’t until I looked on a macro level, examining the media’s influence, politics, and societal biases that I realized the detrimental impact not having representation can have.

Why Representation Matters

Representation means having a voice, seeing oneself in positions of power and success, and providing hope for the younger generation. It’s a fundamental human desire to want to see oneself reflected in the world around them. When it comes to media representation, numerous studies have shown the significant impact it has on self-esteem, identity, and feelings of belonging in society. For Arabian individuals growing up in America, representation means having the opportunity to showcase their culture and values to a broader audience, breaking down stereotypes and creating more understanding and acceptance.

Impact of Misrepresentation

On the flip side, not having representation leads to misrepresentation and stereotypes that can be damaging. With a lack of representation, media and individuals can perpetuate harmful stereotypes, leading to biased attitudes and discrimination. Arabian individuals have often been portrayed as villains or terrorists in media, leading to racist attitudes and harmful rhetoric. Moreover, the lack of representation for the Arabian community leads to the underrepresentation of their needs and concerns and contributes to the ‘othering’ of their culture, making it more challenging to find solutions to real-world problems.

Representation in Politics

Representation isn’t limited to media representation. The political representation of different identities and cultures is equally crucial. When there are no Arabian voices in politics, it can lead to policies and decisions that do not account for the Arabian community’s needs and values. The need for representation in politics also provides a chance for Arabian Americans to celebrate and acknowledge their culture and make it a part of the larger conversation.

Creating Change and Amplifying Voices

Representation is vital, but it’s just the beginning. To bring about change, Arabian Americans must work to amplify their voices and create a more diverse and inclusive society. This means coming together as a community, supporting one another’s endeavors, and uplifting underrepresented voices while also calling out harmful biases and stereotypes.

Conclusion

Growing up as an Arabian person in America has been a journey of both internal and external struggle. However, the importance of representation cannot be overstated. It’s time for Arabian individuals to take charge of their narrative, showcase their culture, and make their presence felt in media, politics, and all areas of society. With representation and community support, Arabian individuals can create a more accepting, diverse, and inclusive society for generations to come.
