The Importance of Recognizing that Jesus Grew in Wisdom

As Christians, we often focus mainly on the divine nature of Jesus and overlook the fact that He also had a human nature. We hear a lot about His miracles, teachings, and divine mission, but we don’t often reflect on the fact that He grew up as a child, went through the same struggles and challenges that we do, and had to learn and grow like any other human being. This is why recognizing that Jesus grew in wisdom is so important.

Wisdom is often associated with age and experience. The more we live, the more we encounter different situations and learn from them, the more we become wise. This applies to Jesus as well. Although He was fully God, He was also fully human, and that meant that He had to learn and grow like any other human being.

In Luke 2:52, we read that “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” This verse tells us that Jesus didn’t just miraculously possess wisdom and knowledge – He acquired them through learning and experience. He didn’t come into the world with all the answers; He had to grow and develop, just like any other child.

But why is it important for us to recognize this fact about Jesus? For one thing, it makes Him more relatable to us. If we see Jesus as only divine, then He becomes almost unreachable, and we might feel like we could never live up to the standards of perfection that He embodies. But by recognizing Jesus’ human nature, we see that He faced the same struggles and challenges that we do. He understands our human condition because He lived it Himself.

Furthermore, recognizing that Jesus grew in wisdom gives us a model to follow. If the Son of God had to learn and grow, then we can take comfort in the fact that it’s okay for us to be imperfect and to make mistakes as well. We don’t have to have all the answers right away. We can take the time to learn, to grow, and to acquire wisdom through our experiences.

In conclusion, recognizing that Jesus grew in wisdom is an important aspect of our faith. It reminds us of Jesus’ humanity, making Him more relatable and approachable. It also provides us with a model to follow – if the Son of God had to learn and grow, then we can too. Let us take comfort in the fact that we don’t have to have all the answers right away, but rather, we can take the time to learn and grow in wisdom, just like Jesus did.
