While the Analytical Engine was never completed, it was the first example of a programmable machine.

The first electronic computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer (ENIAC), was built in 1946 and utilized vacuum tubes to perform calculations. ENIAC was followed by other early computers like the Univac 1, which was the first computer to be mass-produced for commercial use in 1951.

The invention of transistors in the 1950s and integrated circuits in the 1960s led to faster and more efficient computers, which gradually became more accessible to the public. The 1970s saw the rise of personal computers like the Apple II and IBM PC, which were more affordable and user-friendly.

The development of the internet in the 1980s and 1990s allowed computers to become interconnected and enabled the creation of complex networks. The rise of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets in the 2000s further increased the popularity and accessibility of computing.

Today, the field of computing is advancing at an unprecedented pace, with developments in quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Quantum computers, in particular, have the potential to revolutionize computing by performing certain calculations exponentially faster than classical computers.
