The Danger of Familiarity: Insights from the Bible on How Contempt Can Arise from Close Proximity

Have you ever heard the saying, “familiarity breeds contempt”? This common phrase speaks to the idea that the more we become familiar with someone or something, the more likely we are to grow negative feelings towards them. But where exactly does this idea come from and how can it be prevented?

As it turns out, the Bible has quite a bit to say about this topic. In fact, there are several examples of characters in the Bible who, due to their close proximity to others, allowed feelings of contempt to take hold. Here are a few insights from the Bible on how contempt can arise from familiarity:

1. Judas Iscariot and Jesus

Judas Iscariot was one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. He was present for numerous miracles and spent significant amounts of time with Jesus. However, his close proximity to Jesus did not prevent him from betraying him for 30 pieces of silver.

It’s easy to assume that Judas was an outlier – someone with a particularly malicious heart. However, it’s worth noting that the other disciples were also familiar with Jesus and yet did not betray him. Instead, they continued to support him even in his darkest moments.

The difference between Judas and the other disciples was not their level of familiarity with Jesus, but rather their response to that familiarity. While the other disciples allowed their relationship with Jesus to strengthen and grow, Judas allowed feelings of greed and jealousy to take hold.

2. King David and Bathsheba

King David was a man after God’s own heart, yet even he was not immune to the dangers of familiarity. In 2 Samuel 11, we read about how David saw Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite, bathing and became overcome with desire for her. Despite knowing that Bathsheba was another man’s wife, David pursued her and ultimately had an affair with her.

David’s familiarity with Bathsheba (as well as his position as king) led him to believe that he could have whatever he wanted, regardless of the consequences. His actions not only hurt Bathsheba and Uriah, but also had long-lasting consequences for David and his kingdom.

3. Jonah and Nineveh

In the book of Jonah, the prophet is sent to the city of Nineveh to warn them of God’s impending judgment. Despite the wickedness of the city, the people of Nineveh hear Jonah’s message and repent of their sins.

Instead of rejoicing in the city’s salvation, however, Jonah becomes angry with God and even goes so far as to express a desire for God to destroy the city. It’s clear that Jonah’s familiarity with Nineveh – as well as his own prejudices and biases – played a role in his negative response.

Preventing Contempt from Familiarity

So what can we learn from these examples? How can we prevent contempt from arising in our own relationships, workplaces, and communities? Here are a few suggestions:

– Guard your heart: Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts, for everything we do flows from it. This means being mindful of our thoughts and emotions, and taking steps to prevent negative attitudes from taking root.
– Practice empathy: When we take the time to understand others’ perspectives and experiences, it becomes much harder to feel contempt towards them. This means listening actively, asking questions, and seeking to find common ground.
– Focus on gratitude: When we take the time to appreciate the good things in our lives – including the people we are familiar with – it’s much easier to feel positive emotions towards them. This means taking time to express gratitude, even for the small things.

In conclusion, while familiarity can indeed breed contempt, it doesn’t have to. By being mindful of our attitudes and taking steps to prevent negative feelings from taking root, we can foster positive, healthy relationships in all aspects of our lives.
