The 9/11 Information You Never Knew: Lesser-Known Facts About the Tragedy

It has been almost two decades since September 11, 2001, the day when America was under attack. The tragedy, involving the deadliest terrorist attacks in history, lives vividly in our memories. The world came together in mourning and support, and history was rewritten. However, certain facts remain unknown to many, and they still hold the power to surprise and intrigue us. In this article, we take a closer look at lesser-known facts about the tragedy that you never knew.

1. The Attack was not Entirely a Surprise

It is often believed that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were a complete surprise to the US intelligence agencies. However, this is not entirely true. Various reports state that the CIA and other agencies had credible information about the Al Qaeda’s intentions to attack the US. However, the information was not acted upon effectively, and opportunities to prevent the attack were missed.

2. The Pentagon Almost Escaped the Attack

The Pentagon attack could have been much worse, but it was not due to a stroke of luck. The hijackers had initially planned to attack the White House, but it was changed to the Pentagon as they believed it was an easier target. However, the attackers missed their intended target and hit the less populated and less fortified west side of the Pentagon building.

3. A Dog was Among the First Responders

While human first responders will always be remembered for their bravery and sacrifice, a lesser-known fact is that a dog called Sirius was also among them. Sirius was a golden retriever and a trained bomb-sniffing dog who worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Sadly, Sirius lost his life while on duty, and he was honored with a memorial at the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

4. The Terrorists had Expired Visas and Overstayed their Welcome

Despite the stringent security measures in place for people entering the United States, the terrorists responsible for 9/11 managed to get past them. However, another lesser-known fact is that the terrorists had expired visas and had also overstayed their welcome in the US. This highlights the critical need for better immigration control measures.

5. A Global Financial Crisis was Avoided

The World Trade Center (WTC) was among the financial hubs of the world and a center of economic activity. However, the aftermath of 9/11 could have spelled a global financial disaster. Still, through the efficient response of governmental authorities and financial institutions, stability was maintained, and a potential global economic calamity was avoided.
