Socrates was an Athenian philosopher born in the 5th century BCE. His method of inquiry, known as the Socratic Method, involved asking a series of questions to uncover a person’s underlying beliefs and assumptions. He believed that knowledge is the key to living a virtuous life and that wisdom comes from admitting one’s own ignorance.
Plato, a student of Socrates, was born in Athens in the 4th century BCE. He founded the Academy in Athens, which was the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Plato’s philosophy was centered on the idea of Forms, which he believed were eternal, unchanging, and perfect. He argued that the physical world we see is only a shadow of the true reality that exists in the realm of Forms.
Aristotle, a student of Plato, was born in Greece in the 4th century BCE. He is known for his wide-ranging contributions to philosophy, including ethics, metaphysics, politics, and biology. Aristotle believed that knowledge comes through observation and experience, rather than pure reason. He identified three types of knowledge: theoretical, practical, and productive.
These three philosophers laid the groundwork for Western philosophy and influenced many thinkers in the centuries to come. Their ideas remain relevant to this day, and their legacy continues to be felt in fields like ethics, politics, and science.
