Science experiments are a fun and educational way to engage kids at home. Whether you’re a parent looking for hands-on activities to do with your kids or a teacher searching for fun classroom experiments, here are some science experiments to try with kids.
1. Balloon Rockets: Blow up a balloon and tape it to a straw. String a piece of string across the room and tape it to two chairs or objects. Thread the straw onto the string, making sure the straw can move freely along the string. Let go of the balloon and watch it fly across the room.
2. Dancing Raisins: Fill a glass with clear soda (e.g. Sprite, 7-Up) and drop in some raisins. Watch as the raisins dance up and down in the soda, propelled by the gas bubbles.
3. Invisible Ink: Mix baking soda and water to create a solution. Use a cotton swab to write a message on a piece of paper with the solution. Once the message dries, paint grape juice over the message to reveal the hidden message.
4. Egg in a Bottle: Light a piece of paper on fire and put it in a jar. Place the mouth of an egg over the jar and watch as the egg gets sucked into the bottle. This works because as the paper burns, it consumes the oxygen in the jar, creating a vacuum that pulls the egg into the jar.
5. Oobleck: Mix cornstarch and water together to create a gooey substance that’s neither solid nor liquid. Explore this non-Newtonian fluid by playing with it and seeing how it behaves.
6. Light Refraction: Fill a glass with water and place a pencil in the glass. Observe how the pencil appears bent at the waterline due to the principles of light refraction.
7. Volcano: Create a mini volcano by combining baking soda and vinegar in a jar. The mixture will create a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas, causing the “volcano” to erupt.
These science experiments are easy to do at home and can teach kids about physics, chemistry, and more. Encourage kids to ask questions and make observations during each experiment to enhance their learning experience.
