In recent years, college tuition costs have continued to rise dramatically. This reality is particularly alarming for students and families who are struggling to afford higher education.

According to a report from the College Board, average tuition and fees for in-state students at public four-year universities rose 2.6% between the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years. Meanwhile, tuition and fees at private non-profit four-year institutions rose 2.4%.

These increases might seem small, but they add up quickly. Since the 2000-2001 academic year, the average cost of tuition and fees at public four-year colleges has more than doubled when adjusted for inflation. Private non-profit four-year colleges have seen similar increases.

As tuition costs continue to rise, many students are forced to take on massive amounts of debt to pay for college. The average student loan debt for a bachelor’s degree recipient in 2019 was $28,950, according to the Institute for College Access and Success. That’s a lot of money to owe before even starting a career.

Rising tuition costs create additional barriers for low-income students and students of color. These students are already more likely to struggle to afford college, and rising costs make it even harder for them to access higher education.

Some policymakers have proposed solutions to address the rising cost of college. These include expanding federal financial aid programs, investing in state higher education systems, and providing more support for community colleges.

It’s clear that we need to take action to make college more affordable for students and families. Access to higher education should be a right, not a privilege reserved for the wealthy. By working together, we can create a more equitable system that allows everyone to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.
