Preserving the Beauty of Intangible Cultural Heritage: Insights on UNESCO’s Initiatives
As cultural diversity is increasingly recognized as an essential element of sustainable development, it has become more important to protect and promote intangible cultural heritage. This type of heritage includes traditions, rituals, practices, and expressions that are passed down from generation to generation and are often associated with significant events, beliefs, or knowledge systems. These intangible cultural heritage elements are critical to the fabric of communities worldwide, and they often play a significant role in promoting social cohesion, creativity, and innovation.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is an international organization that is dedicated to promoting and protecting cultural heritage worldwide. UNESCO recognizes that intangible cultural heritage is just as significant as tangible heritage and has implemented initiatives to safeguard this heritage. UNESCO emphasizes the need to respect cultural diversity and to foster dialogue to promote intercultural understanding.
One of the ways UNESCO preserves intangible cultural heritage is by creating the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This list identifies cultural practices, traditions, and elements that are emblematic of specific cultures and countries. The list currently includes 549 elements from 127 countries. The list also includes some intangible heritage elements that are in danger of disappearing, and UNESCO provides assistance to those communities to preserve their heritage.
UNESCO also created the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003. This convention aims to preserve and protect intangible cultural heritage by providing a framework for identifying, protecting, and preserving the heritage. The convention has been ratified by 180 countries, demonstrating the widespread recognition of the importance of intangible cultural heritage.

The program provides support to communities, organizations, and governments to safeguard and promote intangible cultural heritage. It includes measures such as training, capacity building, and technical assistance, and provides funding for safeguarding projects.
In addition, UNESCO has launched the Living Human Treasures recognition program, honoring individuals who are masters of traditional knowledge and skills and who are committed to passing on their knowledge to future generations. This program recognizes the value of these individuals and their dedication towards ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage.
The safeguarding and promotion of intangible cultural heritage has increasingly become a priority for UNESCO, and it is essential to understand that preserving this heritage enhances social cohesion and promotes creativity and innovation.
