Preserving Lebanese Cultural Values in a Globalized World

The world today is more interconnected than ever before, with the advances in technology and transportation making the world a global village. Lebanon, a country that boasts of a rich history, culture, and traditions, is not immune to the effects of globalization. The increasing exposure to westernization and modernization is putting the Lebanese cultural values at risk of being lost forever. It is, therefore, crucial to take deliberate steps to preserve and promote Lebanese cultural values in this rapidly changing world.

One way of preserving Lebanese cultural values is through language. Language is an integral part of any culture. Lebanese people should take pride in their language and make a deliberate effort to preserve it. Unfortunately, with the increasing influence of the English language, young Lebanese people are more inclined to using English in their everyday communication. Therefore, there is a need for Lebanese people to encourage the use of their native language and pass it down to future generations.

The Lebanese cuisine is another essential aspect of the Lebanese culture. Lebanese cuisine is characterized by the use of fresh and wholesome ingredients, herbs, and spices. In recent times, western fast foods have become a popular alternative to Lebanese cuisine. However, to preserve the Lebanese culinary culture, people must promote and patronize their local cuisines, along with traditional dining practices. Lebanese people are encouraged to hold on to the old culinary methods of cooking such as roasting over an open flame, baking in a wood-fired oven, and preparing dishes in earthenware pots.

Lebanese music is another crucial aspect of the Lebanese culture. Lebanese music is characterized by its Arab influence, and it is often used in festivals, celebrations, and other important cultural events. Lebanese traditional music is slowly disappearing from the modern Lebanese music scene. Therefore, there is a need to promote traditional Lebanese folk music and ensure it continues to thrive in the modern era.

Lebanese traditional clothing has a unique style that reflects its culture. The traditional clothing is often tailored for practical purposes, such as withstanding harsh weather conditions and for modesty. However, with globalization, western fashion has become more prevalent, especially among the younger generation. Lebanese people should, therefore, preserve their traditional clothing by wearing it during important cultural events and celebrations.

In conclusion, Lebanese cultural values are at risk of being lost due to globalization and an increasing exposure to westernization. To preserve Lebanese cultural values, it is essential to make a deliberate effort to promote and preserve the language, cuisine, music, and traditional clothing. Lebanese people should be proud of their culture and make efforts to educate the younger generation about their cultural heritage. By doing so, Lebanon can ensure that its culture remains deeply rooted in the globalized world.
