Preserving Indonesia’s Heritage: A Closer Look at the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Indonesia has a rich heritage that goes back centuries. The country boasts of numerous cultural traditions and practices that are still kept alive by the people. These cultural practices are essential to the identity of the Indonesian people and help them connect with their history and ancestors. However, despite their importance, many of these cultural practices are at risk of fading away. That’s where the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage comes in.

The National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is a registry of cultural practices, artifacts, and expressions significant to Indonesian culture. The list was established in 2010 under Presidential Decree No. 10 of 2010 on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The objective of the national list is to protect, promote, and preserve Indonesia’s intangible cultural heritage.

The national list consists of 755 elements that encompass a diverse array of cultural traditions, such as rituals, festivals, games, music, dance, and crafts. Some of the most notable examples include batik, wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), and gamelan music. The intangible cultural elements on the list are classified into five categories: oral tradition and expression, performing arts, social practices, knowledge and practices related to nature and the universe, and traditional craftsmanship.

The preservation of Indonesia’s intangible cultural heritage is essential for several reasons. First, it helps promote understanding and respect for different cultural traditions and practices. Additionally, preserving cultural heritage supports local communities by providing economic opportunities through tourism and increased cultural exchange. Finally, preserving culture helps maintain a connection between generations by passing down traditions and knowledge from one generation to the next.

One example of how the national list is impacting the preservation of cultural heritage is through the safeguarding of the Toraja funeral ceremony in South Sulawesi. This event is a significant cultural practice for the Toraja ethnic group, but it was at risk of disappearing due to modernization and changes in values. However, with the help of the national list, the ceremony was revitalized, and efforts were taken to bring awareness and education to the public about its importance.

In conclusion, Indonesia’s intangible cultural heritage is significant and must be preserved for the benefit of future generations. The National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is an essential tool in safeguarding Indonesia’s heritage by promoting awareness, education, and respect for traditional cultural practices. The list not only helps preserve culture but also promotes economic opportunities and strengthens social cohesion. Let’s all work together to help preserve Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
