My Personal Leadership Journey: An Honest Essay

Throughout my professional career, I have had the opportunity to work under several leaders and have led multiple teams myself. Looking back, I realize that my leadership journey has been a rollercoaster ride with its highs and lows. In this essay, I aim to share my personal experiences, insights, and learnings that have shaped me into the leader that I am today.

The Beginning

My journey began as a fresh college graduate when I landed my first job as a junior executive in a small firm. I was thrilled about starting my professional career, but I had no idea of the challenges that awaited me. I was tasked with leading a team of five individuals who were not enthusiastic about their work. At first, I tried using a dictatorial approach to get things done, but that only made matters worse. I was at a crossroads, questioning whether I was cut out to be a leader. However, I persisted, and slowly but surely, I realized that the answer was to shift my approach and become a democratic leader. I learned that collaboration, listening, and empathy are key traits of a good leader.

Building the Right Team

As I moved on to different roles and organizations, I realized that building the right team is crucial for a leader. I learned that a team with diverse skills and backgrounds was more likely to be successful than a homogenous one. However, building a diverse team can be a challenge, especially when you are not willing to let go of your biases. I had to consciously challenge my own biases at every step, and that approach helped me to build a team of individuals with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

Navigating Tough Times

As a leader, I have also had my share of tough times, such as when one of my team members who was key to a project left abruptly. I had to navigate the situation and ensure that the project did not suffer, while also being empathetic towards my team member’s reasons for leaving. This experience taught me to be agile, adapt to changing situations, and manage expectations.

Leading by Example

Lastly, leading by example has been a core principle of mine. I strongly believe that leaders must walk the talk and be role models for their team. As leaders, we must be willing to work alongside our team, learn from our mistakes, and grow along with them. By doing this, I have earned the respect and trust of my team members, which has translated into higher productivity and job satisfaction.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my leadership journey has been a significant learning experience, and I am grateful for the lessons and insights I have gained. I believe that leaders must constantly improve and learn, and I intend to do just that. Lastly, I encourage aspiring leaders to stay true to their values, lead with empathy and respect, and never stop learning.
