It’s been quite a journey for me in the past 8 years. There have been highs, lows, and everything in between. But through it all, I’ve grown and learned so much about myself and the world around me. In this article, I’ll share my personal journey and the good, the bad, and the ugly that came with it.

Starting out, I was a fresh-faced college graduate with big dreams and a lot to learn. I was eager to jump into the workforce and start climbing the ladder of success. But reality hit hard, and I quickly realized that the working world was not as glamorous as I had imagined. My first job was in a stressful and toxic environment where I was overworked and undervalued. However, I learned some invaluable lessons during this time which helped me to grow as a professional. I learnt the importance of standing by my values, and the impact of surrounding myself with the right people.

Several years down the line, I secured a job that was a much better fit for me. I was working closely with a mentor who believed in me and helped me to grow as a professional. I was able to learn and develop new skills which increased my value in the workplace. The experience also cemented how important it was to identify when something isn’t working for you, and the importance of taking action.

However, challenges were not far away. A new project was assigned to me, and I was ready to take it head-on. I poured in all my energy but the project did not take-well with the manager, and it started to affect my confidence. I was so invested in the work, but it simply wasn’t meant to be. It was difficult to admit defeat and let the hard work go to waste, but I learned that giving up on something isn’t always a bad thing. It’s okay to acknowledge when things aren’t working and pivot when necessary.

One of the biggest learnings came from a mistake. I made a big error on a project that had consequences. Initially, I was embarrassed, and afraid for my job but the mistake taught me the importance of owning up to my mistakes, apologizing, and figuring out how to fix the problem and not dwell on the mistake. It was a difficult experience but with this experience, I was able to develop stronger self-awareness, empathy, and a greater understanding of the value of collegiality.

In conclusion, my journey in the past 8 years have been filled with valuable lessons. I’ve learned the importance of standing by my values, surrounding myself with the right people, taking action, acknowledging when something isn’t working, owning up to my mistakes, and being kind and empathetic to others. These learnings have not only made me a better professional, but also a better human being. Here’s to the next chapter of my journey!
