My K1 Visa Experience: From Filing to Approval
If you’re planning on marrying a foreign national, one of the crucial steps that you’ll need to take is applying for a K-1 visa, also known as a fiancé visa. While the process can be challenging and time-consuming, it ultimately allows you to bring your fiancé to the United States for marriage. In this article, I’m going to share my K1 visa experience, from filing to approval, to give you an idea of what to expect.
Filing the K1 Visa Petition
The first step in the K1 visa process is filing a petition with USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services). This petition includes Form I-129F, which serves as a request for the visa. You’ll also need to provide various supporting documents, such as proof of your U.S. citizenship, proof of your fiancé’s identity, and evidence that you’ve met in person within the last two years.
My fiancé and I spent a considerable amount of time gathering all of the necessary documents and making sure that everything was in order. We also hired an immigration attorney to ensure that we didn’t miss any crucial steps. After we filed the petition, we waited for over six months to receive a response. During this time, we tried to stay patient and continued to communicate with our attorney for updates.
Approval and Visa Processing
When we finally received approval for the petition, we moved on to the visa processing phase. This involved submitting additional forms and documents, such as the DS-160 application and a police certificate demonstrating that my fiancé didn’t have a criminal record. We also attended a medical examination and a consular interview.
The medical examination took place at an approved clinic, and my fiancé had to undergo various tests and vaccinations. Eventually, we went to the embassy in my fiancé’s country for the consular interview. This was a nerve-wracking experience, as we knew that this was the final step before we could receive the visa. Fortunately, everything went smoothly and the embassy issued the visa within a few days.
Entry to the United States
After my fiancé received the visa, we had to make preparations for the move to the U.S. This involved booking flights, packing bags, and saying goodbye to friends and family. When my fiancé arrived in the U.S., we had to get married within 90 days of entry to complete the visa process.
Overall, my K1 visa experience was both stressful and rewarding. While there were many challenges and moments of uncertainty, I’m grateful for the support of my loved ones and the guidance of our immigration attorney. If you’re planning on applying for a K1 visa, my advice is to stay patient, stay organized, and seek professional help when needed. The journey may be long, but the result is worth it.
