My Fitness Journey: From Couch Potato to Iron Man
There was a time in my life when being a couch potato was something of a skill. I could spend hours upon hours binging my favourite shows, and takeout was always on speed-dial. However, something inside of me started itching for a different kind of lifestyle. I wanted to be able to hike for miles without feeling winded, and I wanted to keep up with my young, energetic nephews. That’s when I decided to embark on my fitness journey.
Here’s how I went from couch potato to Iron Man:
1. Taking baby steps
When you’re starting out as a couch potato, it’s essential not to overwhelm yourself. Deciding one day to run a 10K or to start going to the gym for five hours a day is a recipe for disaster. Instead, I started small. Going for a walk around the block. Doing a few at-home workouts. I kept it simple and manageable, so I wouldn’t be deterred by the effort involved.
2. Setting small goals
As I started getting more comfortable with a fitness routine, I realized the importance of setting small, achievable goals. Every week, I would set an achievable goal for myself, such as going for a longer walk or doing more reps of a particular exercise. These small wins motivated me to keep going and to push myself further.
3. Establishing a routine
It’s often said that a routine is critical when it comes to fitness, and I couldn’t agree more. Establishing a routine meant that even on days when I didn’t feel like working out, I would still do something. Over time, I found it easier to maintain a routine, and it became second nature to me.
4. Seeking support
One of the biggest challenges I faced on my fitness journey was feeling like I was alone. I didn’t know anyone with a fitness routine, and I felt like everyone around me was content with their unhealthy habits. That’s when I turned to online support groups and communities. Being able to connect with people who were going through the same thing as me made me feel less alone and more motivated.
5. Finding a form of fitness that I loved
Finally, I realized that the key to long-term success with fitness was to find something that I genuinely enjoyed. For me, that was running. Once I started running, I couldn’t stop. It was something that I looked forward to every day, and it gave me the motivation to keep pushing myself to new limits.
In conclusion, my fitness journey took time and effort, but it was worth it. By taking baby steps, setting small goals, establishing a routine, seeking support, and finding a form of fitness that I loved, I went from being a couch potato to an Iron Man.
