My Experience with 6 Months of Self-Care: Lessons I Learned and Changes I Embraced

Self-care is something that is becoming increasingly prevalent in our society. People are realizing the importance of taking time for themselves and prioritizing their well-being. I recently embarked on a 6-month journey of self-care, and I want to share with you the lessons I learned and the changes I embraced along the way.

Setting the Stage

Before I began my self-care journey, I was feeling overwhelmed and burnt out. I was constantly striving to be productive and achieve more, all while neglecting my emotional and physical health. It was clear that I needed to make a change, and that’s when I decided to commit to 6 months of self-care.

Lesson 1: Self-Care is Not Selfish

One of the biggest lessons I learned during my self-care journey is that taking care of yourself is not selfish. Prioritizing your own well-being actually allows you to show up better for the people around you. For example, when I started meditating every morning, I noticed that I was more patient and present with my loved ones throughout the day.

Lesson 2: You Don’t Have to Spend a Lot of Money to Practice Self-Care

Another misconception about self-care is that it has to be expensive. While treating yourself to a spa day or buying a new outfit can certainly be a form of self-care, it’s not the only way. Throughout my 6-month journey, I found that many of the most impactful self-care practices were free or low-cost. Taking a walk in nature, practicing gratitude, and writing in a journal were just a few examples.

Lesson 3: Self-Care is a Daily Practice

Self-care is not something that you do once in a while; it’s a daily practice. During my 6-month journey, I made a conscious effort to incorporate self-care into my daily routine. Whether it was taking a few moments to stretch in the morning or setting boundaries around my work schedule, I found that these small actions added up and made a big difference in my overall well-being.

Changes I Embraced

Along with these lessons, I also embraced several changes during my self-care journey. These changes were specific to my own needs and desires, but they may spark ideas for your own self-care practice.

Change 1: Setting Boundaries Around Work

As someone who works from home, it can be easy to blur the lines between work and personal time. During my 6-month self-care journey, I set clear boundaries around my work schedule. I designated specific times for work and made sure to disconnect from my computer and phone during non-work hours.

Change 2: Practicing Mindful Eating

I have always struggled with emotional eating, and during my self-care journey, I decided to address this issue head-on. I started practicing mindful eating, which involves paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness signals, as well as the taste and texture of food. This change not only helped me develop a healthier relationship with food but also increased my sense of mindfulness in other areas of life.

Change 3: Prioritizing Sleep

Sleep is something that often gets sacrificed in the name of productivity, but during my 6-month self-care journey, I made a conscious effort to prioritize sleep. I established a consistent sleep schedule and made my bedroom a calming oasis, free of technology and distractions. This change allowed me to feel more rested and rejuvenated throughout the day.

Conclusion

Self-care is a journey that looks different for everyone, but the lessons I learned and changes I embraced during my 6-month journey have had a lasting impact on my overall well-being. Remember that self-care is not selfish, can be affordable, and is a daily practice. Try incorporating some of these lessons and changes into your own self-care routine and see how they positively impact your life.
