As a health volunteer overseas with HVO, my experiences have been rewarding, enriching and unforgettable. In this article, I would like to share my story and why volunteering abroad can make a difference in the world and in your own life.
My journey began with an application to HVO, a non-profit organization that sends healthcare professionals to underprivileged and underserved communities around the world. After an interview and a few weeks of preparation, I was on a plane to my destination, where I would spend the next few months working with local healthcare professionals to improve healthcare services.
One of the first things that struck me was the incredible need for healthcare services. In the community I served, many people did not have access to basic healthcare, let alone specialized treatments for more serious conditions. I worked alongside local healthcare professionals to provide medical care, conduct health assessments, and distribute medicine to those in need.
In addition to providing healthcare services, our team also focused on educating the community about health promotion and disease prevention. We organized health workshops, created public health campaigns, and held community events to raise awareness about health issues.
What struck me the most was the resilience of the community members we worked with. Despite facing many challenges, they were determined to improve their health and the health of their loved ones. I was inspired by their determination and perseverance in the face of adversity.
My experience as a health volunteer overseas allowed me to gain a new perspective on healthcare and the world. I learned about new cultures, new healthcare systems, and new ways of thinking about health. I met people from different backgrounds and learned about their stories and experiences.
Moreover, my experience transformed my thinking about service and volunteering. I realized that making a difference doesn’t require grand gestures, but rather small and consistent efforts to improve the lives of those around us. Whether it’s volunteering at a local clinic or organizing a community event, every effort counts.
Volunteering abroad with HVO was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to make a difference in the world while also growing personally and professionally. I encourage anyone who is interested in making a difference to consider volunteering overseas with HVO or any other similar organization. The experiences and memories you make will last a lifetime.
