Traveling is a fantastic way to see the world and enjoy some much-needed rest and relaxation. But, as any frequent traveler can tell you, jetting off to a new location can wreak havoc on your body and mind. Jetlag and jetsetting can take their toll, leaving you feeling disoriented, anxious, and exhausted. The good news is that there are ways to maintain your balance and sanity while you’re on the road. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: One of the main reasons why traveling can make you feel downright terrible is because of dehydration. So, make sure you drink plenty of water throughout your journey. Avoid coffee, alcohol, and sugary drinks, as they’ll only make matters worse.
2. Sleep Smart: Jetlag can make you feel “off” for days. To alleviate some of the funk, try to adjust your sleep schedule before you leave. If you’re traveling east, go to bed a bit earlier for a few days beforehand. If you’re heading west, stay up a bit later. Once you’re on your journey, try to stick to your home sleep schedule. Bring ear plugs, an eye mask, and comfortable pillows, so you can snooze on the plane or in your hotel room.
3. Stretch It Out: Sitting in a cramped airplane seat for hours on end can leave you feeling stiff and sore. Make sure you take breaks to stand up and stretch your legs. You can also do some quick exercises in your seat to keep your body limber.
4. Eat Mindfully: Traveling can make it tough to stick to your normal eating habits. But, that doesn’t mean you should make unhealthy choices. Try to eat foods that are high in nutrients and low on processed ingredients. Bring your own snacks and meals if you’re concerned about eating out.
5. Make Time for Self-Care: Traveling can be stressful and overwhelming. So, it’s essential to make time for self-care. You might take a relaxing bath, listen to a guided meditation, or get a massage.
Jet-setting is a fun and exciting way to explore new places and cultures. By taking care of your body and mind along the way, you’ll be able to soak up all the wonders of the world without feeling depleted or run down.
