Health literacy is becoming increasingly important as healthcare continues to grow more complex. The ability to read, understand, and act on health information is essential to maintaining good health. Unfortunately, many individuals lack adequate health literacy, making it difficult to understand complicated medical instructions, manage chronic conditions and make informed decisions about their health.

To address this issue, health professionals and policymakers have been working to improve communication strategies between providers and patients and enhance health literacy skills. One important approach is to ensure that health information is written at or below the recommended grade level for clear communication.

It has been found that information written at a high reading level can lead to confusion and misunderstanding among patients. According to studies, the average American reads at a 7th to 8th-grade level. Yet, much of the health information provided to them is written at a 10th grade level or higher. Patients are often given information that they are unable to understand, leading to poor health outcomes and financial costs.

To improve health literacy, providers should use plain language and limit the use of medical jargon whenever possible. This means avoiding technical terms or using simplified explanations when necessary. Providers can also use visuals such as diagrams or videos to better explain complex medical terms.

Furthermore, healthcare organizations can enhance health literacy by implementing policies that support clear communication. For example, policies can require written materials to be written at a 6th-grade level or lower, and instructions should be reinforced with spoken explanations. Teaching health literacy skills to healthcare providers and patients can also be useful in improving communication and understanding.

In conclusion, improving health literacy should be a priority in the healthcare industry. Writing health information at or below the recommended reading level is an effective method to improve communication and ensure patients can understand and act on their health information. By enhancing health literacy skills, we can improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.
