In a world that’s becoming more interconnected with the passing of time, cultural awareness has become ever more critical. For businesses, governments, or institutions operating in a globalized setting, it has become imperative to recognize and navigate through the five stages of cultural awareness to maintain healthy relationships with the cultures you come in contact with.

Before we explore the five stages of cultural awareness, let’s define what culture is. Culture refers to the beliefs, customs, languages, and practices of a particular group of people. Every culture throughout the world is unique and plays a significant role in shaping its people’s worldview.

The first stage of cultural awareness is the unconscious incompetence stage. In this stage, you’re unaware of your lack of knowledge or understanding of other cultures. Most people are blissfully uninformed of global cultures, leading to cultural misconceptions and miscommunications.

The second stage is conscious incompetence. In this stage, you realize you lack knowledge and understanding of other cultures. This stage can be triggered by various events such as traveling to a foreign country or working with people from diverse cultures. Recognizing your lack of knowledge is the first step in increasing your cultural awareness.

The third stage is conscious competence, where you begin to learn about and acquire knowledge of other cultures consciously. In this stage, you’re aware of your limitations and are putting effort into correcting them. It’s crucial to note that this stage can be an uncomfortable experience. It requires listening, observing and asking questions to learn about new cultures.

The fourth stage of cultural competence is the unconscious competence stage. In this stage, you’re comfortable interacting with people from diverse cultures, and your cultural knowledge has become second nature to you.

The fifth and final stage is the viewpoint integration stage. In this stage, a person’s moral and ethical position is continuously shifting based on interactions with people from other cultural backgrounds. A person who reaches this stage is considered a true cultural expert.

Navigating through the stages of cultural awareness calls for conscious action from individuals interacting with different cultures. The ultimate goal of cultural competence is to seeing diversity as a strength and recognize cultural differences as opportunities for learning and growth.

It’s essential to note that cultural awareness is a continuous journey that requires ongoing education, effort, and practice. Being aware of different cultures is critical in today’s globalized world, and it’s necessary to strive for cultural competence regardless of one’s sphere of engagement.
