Becoming an X-ray Technician: Understanding Education Requirements
For those interested in pursuing a career as an X-ray technician, understanding the education requirements is crucial. In addition to obtaining the educational requirements, X-ray technicians may also need to become certified. To become certified, an individual must first complete an accredited program and pass an exam.
The ARRT certification exam includes both a written portion and a practical portion. The written portion tests the individual’s knowledge of various radiologic procedures, radiation safety principles, patient care, and ethics. The practical portion evaluates the individual’s ability to conduct radiographic procedures properly, position patients for scans, and adjust X-ray equipment settings. After passing both portions of the exam, a candidate can apply for ARRT certification.
In addition to obtaining an associate’s degree and becoming certified, X-ray technicians must also maintain their certification through continuing education. The ARRT requires that individuals complete 24 continuing education credits every two years to stay up-to-date on the latest medical imaging technologies and techniques.
