Innovations in technology and changes in learning requirements have led to a massive shift in the way we approach education. As a result, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) has been working diligently over the years, to create and implement new policies to remain relevant and useful in this ever-evolving space.

The ED has recognized the need for a revamped learning structure that is inclusive of the different learning styles and preferences of students, as well as the use of technology that supports learning in the 21st century.

One way this has been achieved is by initiating and implementing “Competency-Based Learning”. This approach focuses on ensuring that students are prepared both academically and technically for life after school. It emphasizes the development of skills, knowledge, and proficiency of the student rather than the traditional way of examining the amount of credit hours accumulated.

With the ED’s Competency-Based Learning, the aim is to provide equal opportunities to all students to develop competency in different subjects by allowing learning to take place at the student’s chosen pace and at the time and location of their choosing- given that it meets the requirements of the course.

Another initiative instituted by the ED, in 2017 was the launch of #GoOpen, which calls for the creation of an infrastructure that allows access to openly licensed educational materials. This provides an avenue to revolutionize education, making educational resources available to students and educators alike, regardless of their location and socio-economic background.

The ED also supports the use of technology by providing grants and other forms of funding for the implementation of technology-based programs in schools. This has allowed disadvantaged schools the opportunity to purchase, establish, and utilize technology, in line with the ED’s goal of achieving equity of access to education for all.

The ED’s competency-based learning approach, #GoOpen initiative, and support for technology-based education have collectively provided a solid foundation for reinventing learning in the US. They have brought positive and relevant changes that have had a significant impact on the education space, particularly in the current global climate.

In conclusion, the US Department of Education’s continued support of modern approaches to learning and education is revolutionizing the way education is delivered and received in the US. It has ensured that the education space has moved to one that is more innovative, flexible, and inclusive, allowing for greater learning opportunities for all students, regardless of their background and location, a win-win situation for all.
