However, research has discovered that spending too much time on these platforms has a severe impact on our mental health. Thus, it is necessary to understand the connection between social media and mental health.

One of the most significant ways social media affects our mental health is by causing addictive behavior. While causes of addiction vary from person to person, social media platforms have scientifically-proven addictive qualities that make us crave more action from them. One of these qualities that research uncovered is the dopamine hit. Every time we receive a notification or a like to one of our posts, our brains release dopamine which is responsible for the pleasure we feel. This incentive pushes us to spend more time on these platforms. However, this level of addiction is known to cause anxiety, stress, and negatively impact our cognitive abilities over time.

Another crucial link between social media and mental health is its role in the rise of FOMO (fear of missing out) and lower self-image. Social media almost always portrays an idealized version of life. We encounter life in all its perfectness: perfect vacations, perfect relationships, and perfect lifestyles. This exposure to constant idealism on social media makes us feel left out and instills constant pressure to keep up, especially if it’s content we don’t want to miss. Furthermore, these continuous comparisons affect our mental health, leading to anxiety and other mental health issues.

While the impact of social media on mental health has been well-established, there is still plenty we can do to use it in ways that will positively impact our mental health. It is essential to start by managing our social media use better by setting boundaries on the time we spend online. For starters, it is crucial to detach from social media during periods of relaxation and recharge. Secondly, you can start implementing healthy habits like stretching or taking a walk instead of scrolling when you have free time. Lastly, practicing mindfulness and gratitude journaling can help combat the negative emotions that arise on social media.

In conclusion, social media has become a profoundly embedded element of society, and its impact on our mental well-being is well documented. Research findings have linked it to anxiety, depression, lowered self-image and addictive behavior. To combat the issues we face on these platforms and improve our mental health, we must set boundaries, take breaks, and practice mindfulness and gratitude journaling. Through these efforts, we can maintain a healthy relationship with social media while cultivating a healthy and sound mind.
