The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted almost every industry worldwide, including education. As schools and universities around the world were forced to close their doors, online learning became the new norm. The United Kingdom was no exception.
However, the government of the UK took a unique approach to this situation. Instead of just sending students home with a list of online resources, they decided to invest in a program to help bridge the gap. This program was called the National Tutoring Program.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, announced this program in November 2020. The program was designed to help schools across England provide extra tutoring to children who had missed out on countless hours of traditional classroom learning due to the pandemic.
The National Tutoring Program would be focused on helping disadvantaged children, with a budget of £350m. Private companies would be given the opportunity to bid for contracts to deliver the tutoring. However, the Tutoring Program also provided access to support from the Education Endowment Foundation, which is a well-established organization devoted to improving education among disadvantaged children.
The program was designed to help children catch up on their missed classroom time in a structured setting. Students would receive local, experienced, and fully trained tutors who could provide personalized support based on individual student needs.
This initiative was warmly welcomed by educators across the country, and it’s already started yielding good results. The National Tutoring Program has already helped 250,000 children in its first academic year. As a result, there has been an increase in both numeracy and literacy skills among participating children.
Additionally, Chancellor Sunak has also allocated £1.4bn to improve school buildings. This funding will be used for urgent school repairs, upgrades, and rebuilding of primary schools as part of the government’s plan to improve education in the UK.
In conclusion, the National Tutoring Program is just one example of the many ways Rishi Sunak is transforming education in the UK. His commitment to investing in the future generation and trying to bridge the gap created by Covid-19 was evident in the announcement of the National Tutoring Program. The National Tutoring Program has shown positive results, and the UK’s education seems to be moving towards becoming more effective and equitable, even during the pandemic.
