As a college student, I had always heard about the importance of internships. “It provides you with real-world experience,” they said. “It’s a great way to boost your resume,” they added. Although these statements are undeniably true, I never fully grasped the significance of internships until I completed one myself.
My internship experience fostered my personal growth journey in several ways. Firstly, it served as a means of exposure to the professional world, which is starkly different from student life. Secondly, it exposed me to different facets of the industry that I was interested in. Finally, it enabled me to identify and work on my strengths and weaknesses.
As a journalism intern, I was assigned various news stories to cover. My supervisor’s feedback after each piece helped me understand how to improve my writing skills and taught me the value of never compromising on the quality of work. Furthermore, interviewing professionals for the articles gave me a chance to learn about their journeys and the skills they developed along the way.
Apart from that, I was able to work with different teams on diverse projects, both online and offline. My interaction with every team gave me practical insights into the industry.
What I found most rewarding about my internship was that I could explore my interests. While I had a primary area of focus, I was given an opportunity to explore other areas within the company. It fosters creativity and helped me discover a new passion.
