As a parent, finding your unique parenting style that works for you and your child can be a challenging and sometimes overwhelming process. With so much information out there on the “right” way to parent, it can be difficult to determine what truly resonates with your values and parenting goals. Here, I share my journey of discovering my parenting style and offer insights and tips for any parent looking to do the same.

Firstly, it’s important to acknowledge that parenting styles are not absolute. They are a flexible framework that adapts to the needs and developmental stages of both the parent and the child. My journey began with a realization that my parenting style needed to reflect my values and goals for my child. I set out to identify what was important to me and my family, which included instilling values such as empathy, kindness, and independence. I also wanted my child to feel safe, loved, and supported in their individuality.

To achieve this, I began to combine different parenting approaches that aligned with my values. I incorporated positive parenting techniques, gentle discipline practices, and authoritative parenting styles. This hybrid approach allowed me to create a style that spoke to my values and worked for my child and our family.

Along the way, I also learned to be open to change. Parenting is a constant learning curve, and my parenting style has needed to adapt to the changing needs and behaviors of my child. For example, when my child entered their tween years and their emotions became more intense, I had to adjust my parenting style to accommodate their needs. I had to learn how to listen more, be more patient, and approach discipline in a way that supports their emotional development.

In conclusion, finding and developing your parenting style takes time and understanding. It requires self-awareness and a willingness to adjust and adapt as your child grows. Remember to stay true to your values and goals, and be open to trying different approaches. With patience and persistence, you can discover the parenting style that works for you and your child.
