Health Anxiety is Ruining My Life, and What I’m Doing About It
Health anxiety, also known as hypochondriasis, is a condition characterized by an excessive worry about one’s health. Individuals with health anxiety will often experience obsessive thoughts and fears about health issues, seeking reassurance, and medical tests, despite having no significant medical problem. In the age of the internet, where information on symptoms and diseases is easily accessible, health anxiety is becoming more prevalent. In this article, I will share my personal experience with health anxiety, and the steps I am taking to overcome it.
Body:
My journey with health anxiety started a few years ago when I began experiencing muscle twitches and weakness. I became convinced that I had a neurological disease, and my anxiety levels began to skyrocket. I spent countless hours researching my symptoms online, visiting various doctors and specialists, and undergoing a multitude of tests, but nothing showed any significant medical problem.
The constant worry over my health began to impact my life in various ways. I started avoiding social situations, fearing germs or becoming ill in some way, which ultimately led me to become isolated and depressed. I became a hypochondriac, spending hours checking my body for lumps and bumps, and always worrying about the smallest changes in my health.
After years of struggling with health anxiety, I finally decided to take action and get help. I sought the assistance of a therapist who specialized in cognitive-behavioral therapy, which involves changing a person’s negative thoughts and behaviors that contribute to anxiety or depression. Through therapy, I learned how to recognize and challenge my negative thoughts, and not to react to anxious feelings. This allowed me to reduce my worrying and anxiety levels and helped me gain better control of my life.
In addition to therapy, I also took some self-help measures that helped me cope with my health anxiety. Staying away from internet searches about symptoms and diseases, focusing on self-care such as exercise and healthy eating habits, and making time for relaxation activities such as meditation, helped me feel more in control of my life and my anxiety.
Conclusion:
Health anxiety, while not a life-threatening condition, can be debilitating and can impact every facet of one’s life. Seeking help from professionals and making changes to one’s thoughts and behaviors can significantly improve one’s quality of life. My journey with health anxiety was long and challenging, but I have come out the other side with new behavioral techniques that have helped me cope.
