Exercise is often touted as one of the most crucial components of a healthy lifestyle. But how active should you really be? What are the exercise guidelines that we should be following?

The truth is that the guidelines for exercise can vary depending on a variety of factors, including age, fitness level, and overall health. However, there are some general recommendations that can provide a starting point for developing an exercise routine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. This can be broken down into smaller increments, such as 30 minutes of moderate activity five days per week.

In addition to aerobic activity, adults should aim for at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities per week. This can include weightlifting, resistance training, or bodyweight exercises.

It’s essential to note that these guidelines are just that – guidelines. Some people may need more exercise to achieve their fitness goals, while others may need less due to health concerns or other factors.

For example, someone who is recovering from an injury or surgery may need to start with lower-intensity exercise and gradually build up their activity level over time. Someone with a chronic health condition may need to work with their healthcare provider to develop an exercise routine that is safe and effective for their individual needs.

Regardless of your starting point, the key is to find physical activities that you enjoy and that you can realistically incorporate into your routine. It doesn’t have to be a formal exercise program – dancing, gardening, and even walking your dog can all count as physical activity.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to get moving and stay active. Whether you’re meeting the minimum guidelines or pushing yourself to new heights, any amount of exercise can have a positive impact on your physical and mental health.
