Digital art has come a long way since the days of pencil and paper, evolving dramatically alongside advances in technology. It’s a medium that has been embraced by creatives all over the world, thanks to the flexibility and range it offers. But how did digital art come to be, and what’s driving its ongoing evolution?
The first computer-generated artwork dates back to the 1950s and was created by a computer scientist named Ben Laposky. These early pieces were created using analog computers, which were essentially massive circuits that operated using electrical signals. They used agents called oscilloscopes that created wavy lines on a screen, and Laposky was able to experiment with the patterns and colors these lines produced to create some truly groundbreaking works.
Advancements in computer technology quickly accelerated in the following decades, and by the 1990s, personal computers were becoming more widespread. It was at this point that digital art really began to take off, as artists started to experiment with creating images on their computers using software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
The introduction of digital tablets and styluses in the early 2000s marked a major turning point, allowing digital artists to create works that more closely resembled traditional artwork. This technology allowed artists to draw directly onto a computer screen in much the same way they would with a pencil and paper, but with a range of advanced features to bring their vision to life, including layering capabilities, a vast array of brushes and colors, and the ability to edit and manipulate images in real-time.
Today, digital art has become a fully-fledged medium in its own right, with more and more artists working entirely in the digital realm. And as technology continues to advance, so too does digital art, with new tools and techniques continually emerging to inspire and challenge artists to push the boundaries of what can be achieved. Whether you prefer pencil or pixel, there’s no denying that digital art has come a long way in a remarkably short space of time.
