Kazakhstan may not be the first destination that springs to mind for a family getaway, but this Central Asian country has plenty to offer in terms of natural beauty, culture and adventure. From majestic mountains to vast deserts and welcoming oases, Kazakhstan is a country waiting to be explored.

One of the most impressive natural attractions in Kazakhstan is the Altai Mountains in the country’s northeast. This rugged, remote and breathtakingly beautiful region is home to rare wildlife species such as snow leopards and argali sheep. Exploring the Altai with your family can involve trekking, horse riding and even hunting with eagles along with seeing the culture of the Kazakh people. There are also opportunities for rock climbing, rafting, and kayaking along with camping under the stars.

For culture lovers, the cities of Almaty and Astana provide a rich and diverse experience. Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan and is situated in the foothills of the Tian Shan Mountains. This city is packed with museums, galleries, theaters, and live music venues. There is also a plethora of family-friendly options including amusement parks, bike rides, skating rinks and cafes. Astana, on the other hand, is a modern capital located in the central part of the country. It is famous for its ultramodern architecture and diverse attractions such as the Astana Opera, the National Museum and the Bayterek Tower in addition to an endless number of parks and children’s play areas.

No visit to Kazakhstan is complete without experiencing the vastness and contrast of its landscapes. The Charyn Canyon, sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon’s little brother, is located in the southeast of Kazakhstan. It’s filled with rock formations, red cliffs and gorges that stretch for miles. The canyon is home to many unique species of plants such as poplars, redbuds and bushes that create a variety of colorful landscapes throughout the year. There are several family-friendly treks that can be undertaken, where you can explore the canyon in all its magnificence.

Another natural attraction Kazakhstan is proud of is the Kolsai Lakes, located in the southeast of the country. The three lakes, Kolsai I,II, III, are connected by a series of streams and surrounded by dense forests. This natural wonderland is perfect for hiking, fishing and camping in addition to horseback riding through the forest. The lakes are known for their cleanliness, and the water is crystal clear, making it an ideal spot for swimming and also experiencing some of the traditions and culture of the Kazakh people.

When planning your family adventure in Kazakhstan, it’s essential to keep the local customs, culture and etiquette in mind. The Kazakh people are hospitable and welcoming, and it’s respectful to learn some simple Kazakh phrases, alongside local customs that can differ based on the region. With its unique landscapes, cultural history, and engaging activities, Kazakhstan is a perfect destination for your next adventure with your family.
