Folklore has been a significant part of human storytelling since time immemorial. These stories carry an abundance of traditions, beliefs, and values that have been passed down to us. However, at times, these tales might contain harmful stereotypes, prejudices, and discriminatory views that may perpetuate social injustices. This is where we need to analyze and challenge our beliefs and values, making sure they align with social justice values.

Folklore carries an immense power to shape stereotypes in societies. In many cultures, tales about beauty, strength, and intelligence are tailored towards specific races, genders, or ethnic groups. These narratives tend to validate some groups while marginalizing others, which in turn can lead to stigmatization and discrimination. Thus, as storytellers, we need to rethink and reframe these narratives to promote social justice by critically analyzing the values inherent in them to create a better world.

Moreover, historically many tales have portrayed the role of women only in limited ways, causing them an immense disservice. Women have been depicted as weak and helpless who require men’s intervention to succeed, while men are portrayed as leaders and the predominating gender. However, it is high time our folktales celebrated and invested equally in women as cultural heroes, and portrayed their immense strength in all areas of life, teaching acceptance and gender equality to future generations.

In summary, storytelling can influence our thoughts, beliefs, and values. Thus, it is crucial to reflect on the stories we tell, making sure they are inclusive of the rich diversity in our communities, celebrate our differences, and actively help break down harmful stereotypes and discriminatory views. By doing so, we can create a better world for everyone.
