Cultural traditions can be a source of pride and identity, but what happens when those traditions go against the law? In the United States, there are a variety of cultural practices that have been deemed illegal, causing rifts in families and communities.
One such practice is female genital mutilation (FGM), which is prevalent in some cultures and regions of the world. FGM involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia, and it is done for various reasons, including cultural tradition and a belief that it promotes marriage and chastity. However, it is a violation of human rights and is illegal in the US under federal law.
Despite this, some families continue to perform FGM on their daughters, either in the US or by sending them to other countries where it is legal. They may believe that they are preserving their culture or protecting their daughters, but in reality, they are putting their health and well-being at risk.
Other cultural practices that are illegal in the US include forced marriage, honor killings, and dowry-related violence. These practices can have devastating consequences for victims, particularly women and girls.
Forced marriage involves coercing someone into a marriage, often against their will. It can lead to isolation, abuse, and in some cases, human trafficking. Honor killings are murders committed by family members against relatives who have allegedly brought shame or dishonor to the family, often through disobeying cultural norms. Dowry-related violence involves abuse or even murder of a bride or her family by the groom or his family because they are dissatisfied with the dowry.
These cultural practices are not just harmful to individuals, they also go against the values of equality and justice that the US upholds. By criminalizing these practices, the US is sending a clear message that cultural traditions should not be upheld at the expense of human rights.
While it can be difficult to change deeply entrenched cultural traditions, education and awareness can go a long way in preventing and addressing illegal practices. By empowering individuals to speak out against cultural practices that violate the law, we can work towards a more just and equitable society.
