Popular culture has taken over our lives. Everywhere we look, we are bombarded with movies, music, TV shows, video games, memes and trends that have permeated our society and impacted our daily lives. In today’s world, the impact of popular culture on society has become an inevitable topic of discussion. This article aims to explore the ways in which popular culture has affected our society, and how it has shaped our thinking and behavior.

The rise of popular culture has significantly impacted our society in various ways. One of the most prominent impacts is on our social behavior. Popular culture has established certain trends and norms that people often follow blindly. These fads set the tone for our social behavior and affect the way we interact with one another. For instance, social media influencers have a significant impact on the way people present themselves online. Popular culture has also led to changes in societal values, ideals and behaviours, with the portrayal of certain messages being elevated and others being disregarded entirely. This can be either good or bad, depending on how the message is perceived. For example, Star Trek delivered an ideal world of diversity and cooperation to the viewer, while unfortunately on the flip side, movies often portray unrealistic representations of beauty or physical expectations which can feed into and establish unrealistic societal expectations for people to meet.

Popular culture also impacts our economy. An industry surrounding popular culture has emerged, which contributes significantly to the economy. For example, the movie industry is one of the biggest revenue generators in the world, with billions of dollars spent on movie production and distribution worldwide. The music industry too, is a multi-billion dollar entity, with the rise of music streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music contributing to its success.

Popular culture has also played a significant role in shaping our identities. It has provided people with a sense of identity and belonging, creating a shared culture and sense of community. Elements of popular culture, such as fashion, music, movies and TV shows, have become symbols of one’s identity, and people often use these as a means to express themselves and form connections with others who share similar interests. This, in turn, can create subcultures – groups of people who share similar values, beliefs and behaviors.

However, it is also true that popular culture has its negative impacts on our society, as well. Popular culture messages can promote harmful stereotypes and promote dangerous or negative behaviors. For example, movie and video game violence has been linked to increased rates of violent crime, especially amongst young people. Additionally, the prevalence and normalization of sexual harassments in the media infiltrates and festers into a culture of unsafe and negative sexual behaviors.

In conclusion, popular culture has become a powerful force in our society. It impacts the way people think, behave, and perceive themselves, creating a shared culture that shapes our identities. Although it can have some negative impacts, popular culture is not inherently “evil,” and it continues to play a vital role in shaping our world. Learning to critically engage with the media and their messages can be an essential method to successfully navigate the impact of popular culture, and it’s within our own power.
